Gheorgheni station
220/110/20 kV Gheorgheni Substation
The Gheorgheni substation is located in the south-western part of the town of Gheorgheni and is the only injection substation within the Transelectrica SA transmission grid feeding into the 110 kV network in Harghita county.
The substation supplies the entire county under normal operating conditions. The substation modernization works involved: replacing the primary equipment in the 20 kV, 110 kV and 220 kV switchgear; upgrading the digital protection systems by implementing an ABB installation for the protection of the 110 kV busbars; installing a new ABB-type teleprotection system in the 220 kV switchgear; and upgrading the SCADA system for the command and control of the substation, which enables its remote operation and unattended operation without permanent operating staff.
In its modernized form, the 220/110/20 kV Gheorgheni substation has the capacity to supply up to three neighbouring counties, in the event that certain equipment in the adjacent substations becomes unavailable.
In this project, the joining of the tubular Al busbars was carried out using bolted clamps. This procedure was easy and less costly, and offered other advantages such as:
- the assembly was carried out independently of the working and temperature conditions;
- each section (8-15 m) was installed in turn; connecting them was very easy, using the bolted mounting clamps;
- it was not necessary to install the entire busbar section; it allowed temporary arrangements where needed, keeping part of the installation in operation.
