An exceptional project - crossing beneath the Danube

ELM Electromontaj Cluj developed and delivered an extensive project in the Danube Delta area, reinforcing tower foundations and upgrading the 110 kV overhead power line. The works at Sarinasuf - Crișan came in response to the severe deterioration that had built up over time, the 110 kV Sarinasuf-Crișan overhead line having been affected, in the area where it crosses the Sfântu Gheorghe Branch, by bank erosion that left the foundations exposed.

The special conditions of this project arose in the Danube Delta area where, as an alternative to the conventional options, it was proposed to replace the overhead power line with an underground power line, the cable route being approximately 2,100 m long, of which 540 m run beneath the Sfântu Gheorghe Branch, achieved by laying a 3xAl 630 mm2 cable.

This crossing length carried out is, to date, unique in Romania.

Crossing beneath the Danube eliminated the drawbacks of the initial design, such as the impossibility of transporting the drilling rig onto the sandbar and building the cable-jointing chamber in the flood-prone area of the sandbar.
