The 400 kV Gadalin substation is part of Transelectrica's assets and is a major power hub for the National Power System (SEN), currently providing the interconnection between three important substations in the Transylvania region: Iernut, Cluj Est and Roșiori (an interconnection substation with UCTE).

Within this project, ELM Electromontaj Cluj acted as the general designer and works contractor.

The refurbishment works on the 400 kV Gadalin substation involved building a new outdoor-type substation, fitted with modern, high-performance equipment and a new control building. The works also included all the associated site arrangements and utilities.

The project involved carrying out the following:

  • The 400 kV primary circuits;
  • The reactance compensation unit for the high-voltage lines;
  • The fully digital control, protection and metering system;
  • The telecommunications system;
  • The auxiliary power supply systems;
  • The architecture, the buildings and the utilities serving them;
  • The site works and roads.
